Mrs. Carignan's Newsletter

Dear Kindergarten Families, October 22, 2017

This week during literacy we explored the question, What do you like to do with your friends? Each week our reading lessons include specific vocabulary words. We call these our “amazing words.” This week our “amazing words” were signals, proper, perfect, dud, pirates and fabulous. We read the book Smash Crash by Jon Scieszka, which included all the “amazing words.” Other vocabulary words we focused on were in, out, up, and down.

During literacy we have also been reading Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton. Using that book we have been discussing setting and character.

During math we started a new unit on shapes. Students practiced making shapes with rubber bands and geoboards, popsicle sticks, and straws. We focused on triangles, circles, rectangles and hexagons.

Bonny White from the UVM extension continues to visit our class on Thursday afternoons to teach us about nutrition and making healthy snacks. This week they made lettuce rollups with ham, cheese, and pineapple! The students have really enjoyed her visits.

This week we also started small literacy groups. Right now all groups are working on letter writing, letter and sound identification, and practicing sight words.

Today we had a visit from a 5th grade student. She read us a book. We also spent time today with our third grade buddy class reading books and playing outside.

Next week Thursday evening, 10/26, is Spooky Story Night at Green Street School from 6PM-7PM in the library. Come sing songs and hear some spooky stories!

This newsletter is posted weekly on the Green Street School website under the Class Pages tab. Also located on the Class Pages link are pictures of work we have done and classroom visitors. The link is

In your folders today is a signup sheet for conferences. Please get it back to me as soon as possible so I can get everyone scheduled.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
